Slaughter and May acted for United Utilities on landmark water utilities claim

Slaughter and May acted for United Utilities Water Limited and United Utilities Group plc (together, "United Utilities") in responding to proposed collective proceedings brought in the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) by Professor Carolyn Roberts on behalf of approximately 5.6 million of United Utilities’ customers. On 7 March 2025, the CAT handed down a ruling in which it refused to certify the claim. The claim was the first ever private damages claim to rely on UK competition law to challenge alleged environmental breaches.
