Slaughter and May is advising Spirit Energy Production UK Limited (“Spirit Energy”) in respect of the Morecambe Net Zero (“MNZ”) Cluster. The MNZ Cluster is a planned carbon dioxide storage facility in the Irish Sea, to be delivered by a consortium led by Spirit Energy, that has the potential to be one of the biggest carbon dioxide storage sites in Europe.
Our work on this matter included advising Spirit Energy in respect of the recently signed memorandum of understanding (“MoU”) with emitters in the Peak Cluster. The MoU sets out a framework for Spirit Energy and the Peak Cluster to explore opportunities for carbon dioxide captured by the Peak Cluster to be transported and permanently stored in the MNZ Cluster.
The Peak Cluster of emitters is comprised of cement and lime producers in, and around, the Peak District. It is expected that these emitters will deploy carbon capture technology and the connection to the MNZ Cluster will enable the captured carbon dioxide to be permanently stored, helping to decarbonise the UK’s cement production industry.
