EU General Court rules that France must recover illegal aid granted to SNCM

The EU General Court has ordered France to recover €220 million of illegal State aid provided to the Société Nationale Corse-Méditerranée and the Compagnie Méridionale de Navigation. The aid relates to certain maritime transport services that were provided between Marseille and Corsica from 2007 to 2013. As the services were provided under a public services agreement, this article also explores the conditions that are required if financial compensation to a public service provider is not to be considered State aid and why these conditions were not met in this instance.
