Walid Labadi

Walid Labadi is IFC’s Assistant General Counsel, Africa and he is responsible for managing IFC’s legal operations in Africa. Prior to assuming this position Mr. Labadi was Country Manager for Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
Mr. Labadi’s experience as Country Manager included key pioneering projects for the institution. Among these is IFC’s landmark $653 million investment in Benban Solar Park in Aswan, the largest power plant in the world. He has also most recently led the issuance of Egypt’s first private green bond. Mr. Labadi has also supported Yemen’s financial sector and oversaw IFC’s first investment in Yemen in more than 10 years to bolster the Yemen’s food security. During the pandemic, he was able to steward IFC’s engagement in Egypt, by increasing IFC’s engagement in the Egyptian healthcare sector as well as supporting financial inclusion and promoting the digital economy.
Mr. Labadi’s career at IFC spans almost two decades. Previously, he was IFC’s Chief Counsel based in Washington, DC. He was part of IFC’s teams that financed some of the institution's most visible transactions. Mr. Labadi joined IFC with a wealth of knowledge thanks to his prior experiences working as a Senior Counsel at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and before that working for nearly a decade for international law firms. Mr. Labadi holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School (1986) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign (1983).
